Our Birth Story
(The placenta-free version.)
Once upon a time (OK, it was 2015) a leading Australian obstetrician noticed that many of his pregnant patients were chronically dehydrated without realising it. He would tell them to drink more water and would hear the same thing in response: I CAN’T! PLEASE NO! DON’T MAKE MEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Some had nausea and morning sickness and couldn’t stomach more liquid. Some were drinking rehydration solutions or sports drinks to feel better. But those are full of sugar and sodium and ultimately left them feeling worse. Motherhood is a marathon, not a sprint after all. Sports drinks just don’t cut it.
He realised there was a real need for a hydration solution specifically for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Something both healthy and hydrating. Filled with electrolytes, but also the other stuff your body needs when you’re growing / pushing / feeding a tiny human – like folic acid, magnesium and vitamin c. Something not full of nasties and artificial stuff. So he delivered (see what we did there?) Aquamamma to the world. And the rest as they say is herstory…
Spring Water: the water included in our Hydration Cans is nothing but the best, purest spring water from New Zealand. And like everything from New Zealand it’s just better, ok?
Sodium Citrate: This is a mineral that when used in combination with Citric Acid (see above) and Potassium Citrate (see below) acts as an alkalinising agent to make the urine less acidic. This combination is often used to prevent gout or kidney stones. In the case of Aquamamma, these ingredients are included in very small doses to basically help your kidneys flush out toxins and aid in the hydration process.
Potassium Citrate: Potassium is an essential mineral found in the foods we eat. Your body doesn’t produce potassium naturally so it’s important to consume the right balance of potassium-rich foods and beverages. Potassium is also an electrolyte. Electrolytes are GREAT because they assist in a range of essential body functions like digestion, pH balance, blood pressure and… you guessed it… HYDRATION (otherwise known as ensuring your body’s water balance is normalised). Potassiumcitrate is a compound made up of a combination of citric acid and potassium. It has a higher rate of absorption than regular potassium supplements and is often the best source of potassium for people that generally have problems absorbing it.
Magnesium Phosphate: Superhero Alert! During pregnancy, the demand for magnesium increases and Magnesium Phosphate swoops in to save the day. It is a quick acting and gentle form of magnesium that helps with muscle spasms. More generally, Magnesium is essential for a wide range of biological functions in the body such as energy metabolism, nerve conduction, muscle activity, immune function, and DNA synthesis and degradation. Magnesium also plays a structural role in bone strength and aids bone formation.
Steviol Glycosides: To understand more about this guy, you need to understand more about the Stevia plant. Stevia sweeteners are derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) plant, an herbal shrub native to South America. The stevia plant has been used for food and medicinal purposes for hundreds of years, and its leaves and extracts have been used as dietary supplements, and more recently as natural sweeteners. Steviol is short for Steviol Glycosides, which are the molecules found in the stevia leaves that give it its sweet taste, and are extracted from the plant to be used as a sweetener. FUN FACT: Natural stevia sweeteners are 200-350 times sweeter than regular sugar but without the calories.
Erythritol: Erythritol sounds very chemically and a little scary but actually it’s just a naturally-derived sugar substitute. It’s produced by a fermentation process and looks and tastes very much like sugar, yet has almost no calories. It comes in granulated and powdered forms. Erythritol is actually classified as a sugar alcohol. Nothing alcoholic about it don’t you worry - sugar alcohols occur naturally in plants. Erythritol is found naturally in small amounts in grapes, melons, mushrooms, and fermented foods such as wine, beer, cheese, and soy sauce.
Xylitol: Xylitol is a natural sweetener that occurs naturally in some plants. It looks and tastes like sugar but has fewer calories and doesn’t increase blood sugar levels, making it a common ingredient in things like sugar-free gum, diabetes-friendly foods, and toothpaste.
Ascorbic Acid: Otherwise known as Vitamin C! A great mate during pregnancy, not only does Vitamin C boost your immune system and reduce your risk of suffering from iron-deficiency anaemia in pregnancy, Vitamin C is good for your baby’s physical development too. It aids in the production of collagen, which supports normal growth, healthy tissue and wound healing. Each sachet of Aquamamma contains 30 mg of Ascorbic Acid (aka Vitamin C).
Folic Acid: Folic Acid is a synthesized form of folate (it is oxidised) and it has greater bioavailability than plain folate (this just means it gets into your tissues more easily than folate). Taking folic acid during pregnancy can reduce the risk of your baby developing abnormalities called Neural Tube Defects, including spina bifida. Basically it helps your baby’s neural tube develop into a functioning brain and spinal cord - super important stuff. Aquamamma contains a very small amount of folic acid. However, please discuss your overall folic acid supplementation amounts with your health care provider.
Citric Acid: Citric acid is found naturally in citrus fruits, especially lemons and limes. It’s what gives them their tart, sour taste. Because of its acidic, sour-tasting nature, citric acid is predominantly used as a flavouring and preserving agent in food and drinks. We use it to boost acidity, enhance flavour and preserve ingredients.
Lactic Acid: Despite what the name might have you think, lactic acid is not actually connected to lactose, nor does it contain any milk products whatsoever. Rather it is an acid that naturally forms during the process of food fermentation, but it is also used as a natural additive to man-made food and drinks too. The Lactic Acid we use is compliant with a vegan diet.
Malic Acid: Malic Acid is found naturally in fruits ike berries, grapes, peaches and apricots. As well as some citrus fruits. We use it to acidify and flavour some of our drinks.
Black Carrot: Black carrots are a natural alternative to synthetic food colouring. FUN FACT: They actually first originated from Turkey and other regions of the Middle East and Asia. ANOTHER FUN FACT: Even though they’re called black carrots, they actually provide more of a reddy-pinky-purpley colour so we use them in our Mixed Berry flavoured drinks. WE’RE ON A FUN FACT ROLL HERE: The nutrients in black carrot extract that give them their colour are anthocyanins, which have several health benefits like lowering blood pressure, and improving vision.
Carotene: Carotene is the stuff in carrots that makes them orange. But it’s actually found in a whole load of fruits and plants. It’s basically a very strong colored red-orange pigment abundant in plants and fruits. We use it in our orange and lemon flavoured drinks because you drink with your eyes first! And nothing about a clear drink screams orangey, lemony refreshment. It just doesn’t, ok?
Beet Juice Powder: Short for beetroot juice powder, is exactly what it sounds like. A powder made from dried, ground up beetroot juice! It’s used as a natural colouring agent due to its STUNNING vibrant pink colour. Fun fact - you can actually buy beet powder from health food stores now as it’s been recognised as a bit of a superfood. People are adding it to smoothies and foods as it’s filled with great nutrients.
Lutein: Lutein is a carotenoid, found primarily in plants. What’s a carotenoid I hear you ask? It’s a type of naturally-occurring pigment, generally found in yellow-orange fruits, marigold flowers and dark, leafy green veggies. While we use it as a natural colour, many foods you know and love contain naturally high amounts of lutein, including kale, turnips and spinach.
According to the US Food & Drug Administration, natural flavours are: “the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional.”
Or in other words: a completely natural way to flavour food and drinks.
Cane sugar: Yes sugar! We know, we know, sugar is the devil in granulated and powdered form. But when it comes to hydration it is necessary… IN SMALL DOSES. Cane sugar, in combination with the other ingredients, helps the other ingredients work harder to get you hydrated quicker. Aquamamma contains just 2.5grams of sugar, which is less than coconut water. So while we do have more sugar than good ol’fashioned water, we have much less sugar than many other hydration drinks.
Evaporated Cane Juice: This is the evaporated form of sugar cane juice. The juice is filtered, evaporated into a syrup, then crystallised and cured. Ut is used as a natural sweetener in many food and drink products.
